Founded in July 1973, Windward Kai Canoe Club has proudly represented the Windward side of Oʻahu for more than five decades. The club was established by 41 founding members who branched off from Waimānalo Canoe Club with a shared vision of building a club rooted in teamwork, dedication, and the traditions of Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling. That vision continues to guide the club today.

Windward Kai’s history is closely intertwined with the beginnings of Hui Waʻa. One of the club’s original members was instrumental in creating what became Nā ʻOhana Nā O Hui Waʻa. Windward Kai was one of only five founding clubs that helped launch the association during its inaugural year, forever securing its place in the history of Hawaiian canoe racing.

Among the club’s greatest treasures is the legacy of Coach Pali, who has remained with Windward Kai since the association’s earliest days. Over the years, he has witnessed generations of paddlers, coaches, families, and volunteers come and go. Through every season, every challenge, and every victory, his commitment has never wavered. Reflecting on those years, Coach Pali often says he has enjoyed every person who gave their time and heart to move the club forward. Each generation has contributed something meaningful, helping Windward Kai grow stronger while preserving the traditions of the sport.

Windward Kai’s paddling journey has extended far beyond the shores of Hawaiʻi. Club members have proudly represented Hawaiʻi in competitions throughout New Zealand, the U.S. mainland, and beyond. The club has participated in World Sprints, off-island races, and major competitions in California, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, and New York. Coach Pali also played a role in helping establish Arizona’s well-known Dam Race after the conclusion of the former Las Vegas race, further contributing to the growth of outrigger canoe racing outside Hawaiʻi.

For Coach Pali, paddling has never been simply a sport. It is a way of life. Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling carries generations of culture, tradition, discipline, and respect. Success on the water requires more than strength—it requires thinking together, trusting one another, and moving as one crew. Those lessons extend far beyond the canoe and into everyday life.

That lifelong passion continues to inspire Windward Kai Canoe Club today. As the club honors its rich history while embracing the next generation of paddlers, it remains committed to preserving Hawaiian culture, strengthening the spirit of ʻohana, and proudly carrying the legacy of those who helped build the club over the past fifty years.
